Thermal Analysis Reveals the Heat-Response Behavior of Perfluorohexanone Fire-Extinguishing Microcapsules
At CeramXpert, we are committed to providing high-quality thermal analysis consumables that help researchers achieve accurate and reliable material characterization.
In this study, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) was used to investigate the thermal decomposition behavior of perfluorohexanone fire-extinguishing microcapsules. Perfluorohexanone is an efficient and environmentally friendly fire suppressant. By encapsulating it into microcapsules, the active agent gains improved stability, safer storage, and controlled release performance.
Using a Thermogravimetric Analyzer, the microcapsule samples were heated from room temperature to 800°C under a nitrogen atmosphere at a heating rate of 10°C/min. During the test, CeramXpert alumina sample pans provided excellent thermal stability and chemical resistance, ensuring reliable measurement of sample mass changes throughout the heating process.
The TGA curve revealed three main thermal decomposition stages:
🔹 61°C – 311°C: A rapid mass loss of 60.46% occurred, indicating the breakdown of the protective shell and release of encapsulated perfluorohexanone.
🔹 311°C – 535°C: A further 34.38% mass reduction was observed as the remaining shell materials continued to decompose at elevated temperatures.
🔹 535°C – 800°C: Only 3.95% mass loss remained, corresponding to the oxidation of residual materials.
By accurately identifying the thermal response and triggering temperature of fire-extinguishing microcapsules, TGA provides valuable insights for formulation optimization, safety evaluation, and practical fire protection applications.
